The Checkered Flag, September 2010
September in Ohio is a time of change for most. The weather is starting to point toward Fall as leaves change color and students go back to school.August for me was a time to celebrate silver anniversary with my wife and to rest and be renewed.God has a way of reaching down into those wounded and weary parts of us and bringing healing, rest, and renewal.
God authors hope because he has delivered his people from death and despair through His Son Jesus Christ. He speaks to real need and real people. Fall is a season of preparation. I hate to even say the word, but we all know it's coming: WINTER!! ARRRRRGGHH!! For example, Autumn is a time to prepare our buildings and cars for winter. Have you ever had to find your snow scraper or shovel after it snows? Now where did I put that?I have used hot water on the windshield to clear away the ice because I didn't have or couldn't find a scraper.
Sometimes we put off things that are difficult to deal with, like a conversation with someone where there has been conflict, a doctor visit to face a health issue, or prayer with God because we feel unworthy. Oh, how I pray for you to experience the freedom that comes from facing giants with the Lord and a good friend praying with or for you.I have usually seen good results from facing a problem. My Dad says: “A job well begun is half done.” What is keeping you from facing issues or concerns that the Lord wants to use to make you kinder, stronger, and more like Jesus? Let's not let time, fear, pride, or anything keep us from the victory.
Someone has said that everybody deserves to be understood. I think of that old song by Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes: “If you don't know me by now, you'll never, never, never know me”.Sometimes we are misunderstood and it hurts like crazy!
I want to finish with one verse from Scripture found in Joshua 1:9:
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."
God has promised to be our partner in the adventures, battles, illnesses, and conversations of life. You are loved and embraced in His Gripping-and-not-slipping-Grace!

Message in a Minute
Every Sunday morning, our church hosts a radio program called the "Gospel Music Express." It is located on AM 1340 - WNCO from 7:00-8:00 a.m. During this hour program, gospel music is played by our host, Gene Davis. Around 7:30 a.m., Pastor Barry shares a "Message in a Minute."
